La Torre del Rellotge és un antic far construït el 1772 per indicar l’entrada del port. El 1904, quan ja estaven començades les importants obres d’ampliació del port projectades el 1900, s’hi va instal·lar un gran rellotge.
La torre va servir al geodèsic francès Pierre Méchain per efectuar les mesures, a començaments de la dècada de 1790, per calcular la longitud del meridià entre Dunkerque i Barcelona i determinar la mesura bàsica del sistema decimal: el metre.
També és el punt de confluència de la prolongació de dues avingudes importants de la ciutat, el Paral·lel i la Meridiana, que va dissenyar Ildefons Cerdà seguint un paral·lel i un meridià en el Pla Cerdà de Barcelona aprovat el 1860. Està catalogada com a Bé Cultural d’Interès Local.
